Squamish is one of those places that earns its reputation. Situated between Vancouver and Whistler at the head of Howe Sound, it has a concentration of dramatic landscape — granite walls, fjord water, old-growth forest and open alpine that's genuinely hard to match anywhere in the Lower Mainland. For couples planning a BC elopement within driving distance of Vancouver, it's one of the first places I talk about.

Squamish also has a lot of noise around it. The most-photographed locations get a lot of traffic in summer, and couples who arrive without a plan can find their "intimate" ceremony happening in front of a parade of day hikers or rock climbers. The locations that feel truly private are the ones you don't find on Google.

Here's my honest overview of what Squamish has to offer, including a few spots I keep close.

Mountain peak viewpoints

Squamish sits at the base of some of the most dramatic granite terrain in BC, and the viewpoints above the valley are the location type people most associate with a Squamish elopement. The combination of mountain, water, and sky in one frame is hard to replicate.

One of my favourite locations in this category is a peak that requires about 15 minutes of easy, flat trail to reach — and delivers a view that most people would associate with a full day of hiking. It's not well known, which is exactly why I love it. Ceremonies here feel completely private and the backdrop is extraordinary.

Howe Sound waterfront

The stretch of coastline along Howe Sound between Squamish and Britannia Beach offers some of the most accessible mountain-meets-ocean scenery in BC. Porteau Cove is the most well-known and can get busy in summer — but there are quieter spots along the same corridor that give you the same dramatic backdrop with significantly fewer people.

These locations work well for couples with guests who have mobility considerations, or anyone who wants that iconic fjord view without a hike. The water is often calm enough to reflect the mountains behind, especially in morning light.

Old-growth forest

The Squamish Valley has genuine old-growth forest with cathedral-scale trees, filtered light, the particular stillness that only old forest has. For couples whose ceremony energy is intimate, grounded, and quiet rather than dramatic and expansive, a forest clearing is worth serious consideration.

Forest settings also hold in almost any weather, which matters in Squamish. They're naturally sheltered, naturally private, and consistently produce some of the most emotionally resonant ceremony images I've seen. I have a few specific forest locations in the valley corridor that I love sharing in our clients location guides.

Sea to Sky Gondola

The gondola gives couples access to panoramic alpine views without any hiking at all. The summit platform and surrounding trail network have several ceremony-suitable spots, and the gondola itself can be a visual part of the day. There are permit and booking requirements — more on those in the permits post in this blog series — but for couples who want elevation without the physical effort, it's a fantastic option.

The most important thing to know: the gondola is a public attraction, and the summit area sees significant visitor traffic on summer weekends. Timing and location selection within the area matter a lot for privacy.

Helicopter access

For couples who want to go further into alpine terrain that truly feels inaccessible — helicopter elopements out of Squamish open up a completely different category of location. Glacier-adjacent ridgelines, remote alpine lakes, summit terrain that sees almost no human traffic. The planning requirements are more involved, and the payoff in privacy, scenery, and sheer experience is unlike anything else.
