How to Elope in BC, Step by Step

Eloping in British Columbia requires three basic legal elements. Beyond those, you will choose a location and date, confirm access or permit rules, assemble your vendor team, prepare for changing weather, and build a practical timeline.

How to Elope in BC: The 7-Step Plan

1

Define the experience and guest count

Start by deciding how you want the day to feel and who, if anyone, will attend. An elopement can include only the couple or a small group, but guest count affects transportation, location suitability, permits, cost, and scheduling.

Decide:

  • โ€”Private or guest-inclusive
  • โ€”Relaxed or adventurous
  • โ€”Accessible or remote
  • โ€”Half-day or full-day
  • โ€”Legal ceremony that day or symbolic ceremony
2

Set a realistic budget

Your budget determines which locations, vendors, transportation options, and package types are practical.

Account for:

  • โ€”Planning and coordination
  • โ€”Photography or video
  • โ€”Officiant
  • โ€”Hair and makeup
  • โ€”Florals
  • โ€”Permits and admissions
  • โ€”Transportation
  • โ€”Accommodation
  • โ€”Meals and celebrations
  • โ€”Weather-related alternatives

Sea to Sky Elopements offers three planner-led starting points:

Earth Elopementsfrom CAD $6,437 + GST
Sea Elopementsfrom CAD $9,357 + GST
Sky Elopementsfrom CAD $10,843 + GST

Each package includes a dedicated on-site planner, insured vendors, officiant services, photography, hair and makeup for one person, florals, and complete planning and coordination.

3

Choose a region, season, and date

British Columbiaโ€™s size and climate mean location and season should be chosen together. Coastal forests, beaches, alpine settings, lakes, and helicopter-access locations each have different weather, access, daylight, and seasonal limitations.

Evaluate:

  • โ€”Travel time
  • โ€”Guest accessibility
  • โ€”Terrain
  • โ€”Snow or wildfire season
  • โ€”Daylight
  • โ€”Privacy
  • โ€”Permit requirements
  • โ€”Backup-location availability
4

Confirm access, permissions, and a backup plan

Before committing to a location, determine whether the site permits ceremonies, professional photography, commercial activity, pets, dรฉcor, amplified sound, or larger groups.

Also confirm:

  • โ€”Parking and washrooms
  • โ€”Trail conditions
  • โ€”Accessibility
  • โ€”Seasonal closures
  • โ€”Road access
  • โ€”Emergency considerations
  • โ€”A practical alternative location
5

Book your planner and essential vendors

Even a small elopement involves several connected schedules. Book the professionals responsible for planning, photography, officiating, styling, florals, transportation, and any special experience.

A planner-led team can coordinate:

  • โ€”Vendor availability
  • โ€”Travel and setup times
  • โ€”Light and photography timing
  • โ€”Ceremony logistics
  • โ€”Guest communication
  • โ€”Weather decisions
  • โ€”Day-of changes

Every professional vendor included in our packages carries appropriate business and liability insurance.

6

Complete the legal requirements

As of June 2026, a legal BC marriage requires a valid provincial marriage licence, an authorized officiant, and two witnesses over age 19. The licence becomes void three months after it is issued. The couple, witnesses, and officiant sign the required documents after the ceremony.

Keep the marriage licence separate from the marriage certificate: the licence is obtained before the ceremony, while the official certificate is issued after registration.

7

Build the timeline and prepare for the day

A good elopement timeline leaves room for travel, weather, changing clothes, the ceremony, photographs, food, and unplanned pauses.

Finalize:

  • โ€”Meeting locations
  • โ€”Vendor arrival times
  • โ€”Travel buffers
  • โ€”Ceremony timing
  • โ€”Guest instructions
  • โ€”Packing list
  • โ€”Weather triggers
  • โ€”Backup location
  • โ€”Emergency contacts
  • โ€”Marriage documents

Then let the plan support the experience rather than turning the day into another rigid production.

Good Questions

Okay, But How Does Eloping in BC Actually Work?

How do you legally elope in British Columbia?+

To legally elope in British Columbia, you need a valid BC marriage licence, an authorized marriage commissioner or religious officiant, and two witnesses over the age of 19. After the ceremony, you, your witnesses, and your officiant sign the marriage documents.

A BC marriage licence must be purchased within three months of your ceremony date. Only one partner needs to apply in person, but they must bring acceptable identification for both people getting married. The licence currently costs $100 and includes the first official marriage certificate.

Sea to Sky Elopements includes officiant services in its Earth, Sea, and Sky packages. Your planner and photographer can generally act as your witnesses when you are eloping without guests. You are responsible for purchasing and bringing your marriage licence.

Legal information reviewed July 2026. Always confirm current requirements with the Province of British Columbia before your ceremony.

How much does a BC elopement cost?+

The cost of a BC elopement depends on the location, transportation, photography coverage, guest count, permits, vendor services, and any optional upgrades.

Sea to Sky Elopements currently offers three fully planned starting points:

  • โ€”Earth Elopements: from CAD $6,437 plus GST
  • โ€”Sea Elopements: from CAD $9,357 plus GST
  • โ€”Sky Elopements: from CAD $10,843 plus GST

Each package includes officiant services, professional photography, hair and makeup for one person, one bouquet and one boutonniรจre, complete planning and coordination, and a dedicated on-site planner. Sea packages also include the yacht-cruising experience, while Sky packages include the helicopter flight and remote landing.

All vendors are insured, and each package can be customized. Additional guests, weekend dates, extra photography coverage, transportation changes, permit fees, upgraded florals, or other additions may affect the final price.

How far in advance should you start planning a BC elopement?+

It is best to start planning as soon as you know your preferred season, general location, and approximate guest count. The ideal lead time depends on vendor availability, permits, transportation, weather, and how flexible you are about the date.

Weekend dates, summer and early-fall dates, helicopter experiences, yacht bookings, and dates involving several guests generally benefit from earlier planning. A weekday elopement may offer more flexibility, and Sea to Sky has a strong preference for midweek dates even though packages may be available throughout the week.

Couples planning on a shorter timeline may still have options. The location, vendor team, or exact experience may need to remain flexible.

Your planner will help you determine what is realistically available, coordinate the vendors, and create a planning schedule based on your selected package and wedding date.

Do you need a permit or backup location for a BC elopement?+

Some BC elopement locations require permits, commercial photography approval, admission fees, reservations, or permission from the landowner or park authority. The requirements depend on the location, guest count, activities, dรฉcor, transportation, and whether professional vendors are working on site.

Sea to Sky reviews access and logistical requirements during location planning. Your planning team can help identify applicable permissions, but any permit or location fee should be confirmed before the site is presented as secured.

Every outdoor elopement should also have a practical backup plan. A backup may involve:

  • โ€”Using a nearby sheltered location
  • โ€”Changing the ceremony time
  • โ€”Selecting a more accessible landing or meeting point
  • โ€”Moving from a mountain peak to a lake or creek-bed landing
  • โ€”Rescheduling transportation when sailing or flying is unsafe
  • โ€”Converting the experience to an appropriate ground-based location

Light rain does not always require a location change. However, unsafe wind, wildfire conditions, snow, flooding, road closures, marine conditions, or aviation restrictions may affect access. The captain or helicopter pilot has final authority over whether the Sea or Sky experience can safely proceed.

What does a planner-led elopement package include?+

A planner-led elopement package places an experienced wedding planner in charge of the complete experience โ€” not only the booking process.

Every Sea to Sky package includes a dedicated on-site planner who manages:

  • โ€”Location and experience planning
  • โ€”Vendor selection and communication
  • โ€”Timeline design
  • โ€”Ceremony logistics
  • โ€”Transportation coordination
  • โ€”Permit and access research
  • โ€”Guest and family logistics
  • โ€”Weather monitoring and backup planning
  • โ€”Day-of setup and schedule management
  • โ€”Unexpected changes on the wedding day

Sea to Skyโ€™s master planners bring decades of combined experience and have supported hundreds of weddings and elopements. The company also works with insured professional vendors, allowing each specialist to focus on their role while the planner oversees the complete day.

Depending on the package, your elopement may also include:

  • โ€”A licensed officiant
  • โ€”Two or three hours of photography
  • โ€”Hair and makeup for one person
  • โ€”One bouquet and one boutonniรจre
  • โ€”A yacht cruise, helicopter flight, or planned nature experience
  • โ€”Complete planning and day-of coordination

The result is an elopement that still feels intimate, adventurous, and personal โ€” but is supported by an experienced team from the first planning decision through the end of the wedding day.
