Real Weddings: N+C’s Bowen Island Elopement

Planning a wedding can be an adventure in itself, and N+C’s story is a perfect example of turning challenges into magic. Travelling all the way from Texas to British Columbia with their daughter, this family made their dream elopement on Bowen Island a reality despite some unexpected hurdles.

BONUS: You’re definitely going to want to stay tuned to the end of this blog for some trade secrets and myth-busters!

A Last-Minute Adventure

With just four weeks to plan, this elopement was a delightful whirlwind right from the start. And as we all know, I love a last-minute turnaround. Any winter elopement takers?

Just days before their flight, N called me in tears. She’d been feeling unwell and was told her eardrum might have ruptured, making flying dangerous. As their planner, I assured her we could adjust the schedule and encouraged her to seek a second opinion. Thankfully, the new doctor confirmed it was safe to fly, and though N endured some discomfort on the flight, the family made it to BC!

After arriving, and spending a few nights in Vancouver where I helped them obtain their marriage license, they settled into a cozy Airbnb on Bowen Island with stunning ocean views.

Preparing for the Big Day

Bringing the flowers with me, I took the early ferry to Bowen Island to get everything ready. As part of my process, I always scout locations beforehand to ensure everything is perfect—even removing any unexpected debris or trash. A smooth and beautiful experience is my priority. (One time I removed a dead mouse that would have been right in the middle of our “aisle” and another time a needle… yuck. And you’re welcome… haha)

After checking on our locations, and a quick fuel-up taco break (An important reminder to all vendors to also take care of themselves so they can better take care of their couples!), I headed to the Airbnb. When I arrived, our hair and makeup artist, Hannah had just finished working her magic on N and her daughter. They looked incredible! N was stunning in her dress, their daughter adorable in her emerald-green gown and C’s complimentary green velvet suit jacket oozed gorgeous sophistication. Sarah took some beautiful detail shots and then we were headed to our first location for the big day.

The Ceremony

Our first location was Dorman Point, a short but fairly steep hike to a breathtaking lookout. (It literally took our breath away to hike to the top!) N’s favourite trusty cowboy boots were perfect for the trail.

When I checked the location earlier that day, I discovered a hidden path leading to an even more open ocean view. It’s a little trail to the right just past the bench that heads to another lookout with a less obstructed view! I loved this spot because you only have to give a little to gain a lot! You get 6-hour hike views for only 5-10 minutes of walking/hiking!

We took incredible photos, including adorable bubble-filled shots of N’s daughter twirling in delight. A special moment unfolded when C carved their family’s initials into a tree already covered in carvings from other couples—leaving their mark on BC forever.

Next, we travelled to Lighthouse Lane for the ceremony. It’s just a dead-end street with parking for maybe six vehicles. In my opinion, it’s the best place on the island to watch the sun go down! It has plenty of private beaches and coves, tall trees, the most unique rocks (think Iceland vibes), and a gorgeous lighthouse. You can also walk along a pathway that hugs the coastline and marvel at the beauty of the sea.

The soft, glowing light of golden hour (my favourite time of day, I know, I must sound like a broken record at this point..) created a magical backdrop as N and C exchanged vows. Jude, our incredible officiant, led the ceremony, and N’s daughter read a heartfelt poem she had written. Watching C also embrace his new role as a father while becoming N’s husband was deeply moving. Their vows brought tears to everyone’s eyes.

N’s daughter and I signed the registry. It’s pretty common knowledge that when you get married in BC your witnesses should be over 18. However, when looking into it, Jude discovered that as long as they are old enough to understand what they’re doing, a child can sign the license! N’s daughter was just 8 years old and was able to sign the marriage license. It was so special to have her actively take part in the creation of her new family.

Despite the chilly 4°C weather (that’s 39°F for my American friends, especially cold for Texans), we persuaded the family to stay a bit longer for some golden-hour photos. They turned out to be their favourite photos of the day! (not shocking at all) The lighting was perfect and Sarah captured some beautiful memories that I know N and C will cherish forever.

Dream Team Magic

After the family went home for some much-deserved warm showers after their cold day, our team stuck around to enjoy the sunset. We wrapped up the celebration with sparklers and enjoyed a moment of camaraderie as a team, watching the sky turn shades of pink and gold. So not only did we have an awesome time with our couple but we also bonded as a team. I felt so much gratitude to be surrounded by this real powerhouse team of women I get to work with.

One unique feature of Bowen Island is its ferry system. You pay only to get there, and then the return trip is free. However, the setup for returning can be a bit tricky. Instead of designated lanes, cars line up along the street, and if it’s full, you’ll have to wait for the next sailing, but there’s no designated place to wait. So you just kind of need to be close by idling in your vehicle and as the cars load on, you can join in at the end of the line.

Sharing Secrets

One of my favourite parts of planning elopements is discovering and sharing hidden gems like the secret path at Dorman Point or letting you in on the little secret that anyone can sign your marriage license (as long as they know what they're signing!). This is regional information for BC only. While some planners might guard these locations and this information, I love to share this insider information with my loyal tribe as I know that this will help you plan and create a day that is so special for you!

I create unique, unforgettable experiences for my couples and it fills me with great pride when I can share these secrets with others to enrich their elopement experiences. As Jude (Sea to Sky Officiant) said when she arrived at the ceremony site: “Wow, Jocelyn’s done it again!” (Thanks Jude - love you!)

If you’re dreaming of an adventure elopement, know that I’ll go the extra mile to find those magical spots and ensure every detail is taken care of so you can focus on making memories.
